Kia Cee'd: Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) / Description and operation

Block Diagram

LDWS is composed of below units
Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) : Detects drive lane in front and engages warning function if the vehicle is in danger of departing from the drive lane.
FCW : Monitors front of the vehicle and engages warning function if the vehicle is in danger of collision
High Beam Assist (HBA) : Detects head lamp and tail lamp lights of vehicle ahead and turns the high beam ON/OFF.
SLIF (Speed Limit Information Function)
: Detects traffic signs with camera and display speed limit informatin using the map data from navigation.

Camera unit of the LDWS processes the following functions using the video signal input.
Detect and analyze drive lane
Detect the light from foregoing vehicle
Detect and analyze status of foregoing vehicle, and make warning sounds (or message) for driver if necessary.
Transmits the information using high speed CAN communication
Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) unit

The lane departure warning system is a convenient device that recognizes the lanes ahead using the camera image and vehicle signal informtaion and alarms the driver in case of deviation from the lane. It consists of the camera unit and recognizes the lane by calculating the camera image input signal.
The sensor module that processes screen image by sensing the lane ahead on the camera unit, senses the lane and calculates key parameters, i.e. vehicle center offset, road width, vehicle driving angle and road curvature, to keep to the lane. The following procedures are the lane recognizing process through screen image processing.
Sensing the land in procedure of Inputting the road image

LDWS Operation process
When the LDWS switch is pressed, the operation state of the lane departure warning system is displayed at the center while the LDWS lamp is on.
The specific classification of the displays is shown in the following table.

LDWS ON/OFF switch (A)
When the LDWS switch is pressed, the LDWS is on while the LDWS lamp is on. When the switch is pressed again, the LDWS is off and the display lamp is off.

High Beam Auto Control Switch: High Beam Auto Control System is turned ON if the Multifunction Switch Light SW is set to AUTO, and the Light SW is set to High Beam position (Pushed).
If the Light SW is not set to AUTO, or to High Beam position, the High Beam Auto Control System is turned OFF.

The alarm method of LDWS
Visual alarm : The lane to the direction of departure brinks "yellow".
The operating conditions of LDWS
The operating conditions of LDWS is as below.
The switch for LDWS shall be ON. The LDWS lamp is on in the instrument panel when the switch is on.
It operates when the LDWS function is set and the vehicle speed exceeds 60km/h (37mph).
The alarming function is stopped tentatively when the vehicle speed is lower than 60~55km/h (37~34mph) and the alarming is restarted when it is over 60km/h (37mph).
If the driver operates left and right turning lamps to inform the intention of lane change, there will be no alarm regardless of the direction of lane departure.
The lane departure alarming function is restarted after 2 seconds from switching off the left and right turning lamps.There will be no alarm when operating the hazard lamps.
Operate the switch for turning lamps and then change the lane. Random changing of lanes without operating the turning lamps to the driving direction generates the alarm.
When more than 40% of the vehicle body has crossed the lane, the alarm is released by sensing departure for lane change.
The lane departure alarming is not made when the vehicle drives at the center of the lane.
Take caution in the following conditions as the LDWS may not operate properly.
When the lane is not well visible due to rain, snow, dust, puddle or other foreign materials
When the sight is unclear due to bad weather such as fog/heavy rain/heavy snow
When solar beam, street lamp or light from approaching car is reflected on the wet surface of the road
When the brightness has changed abruptly by exiting from the tunnel
When the back light is illuminated strongly against the vehicle direction
When the headlamp is not used or the light beam is too weak in the night or inside the tunnel
When the lane is not distinctive and the road is damaged
When the shadow of median strip covers the lane
When the lane and road are not distinguished by the dusts on the lane
When there are more than 2 lanes to the left or right such as the exclusive road of the bus
On winding road or steep road
When there are signs other than the lane near the lane or similar signs with the lane (E.g. Arrow)
When there is a boundary structure such as the sidewalk block
When the windshield or LDWS camera lens are contaminated with the moisture or foreign material
When the distance to the foregoing car is extremely short or the foregoing car is driving on the lane
When the vehicle is extremely disturbed
In the section of diverging or converging lanes or complicated crossing of the lane (E.g. Interchange and tollgate)
When an object is placed on the dashboard
Arrow on the road surface
When the lane is too narrow or too wide
When the color of the lane is hard to be distinguished from the road
When the temperature around the room mirror is very high by direct sunlight
When the LDWS doest not sense the color of the lane due to surrounded lighting (E.g. Inside the tunnel, the section of natriumlamps in the night and rain)
When the sight is bad enough not to sense the other lanes
This system does not operate when the vehicle speed is under 60km/h (37mph) or the lane marking is not sensed.
Do not use windshield tinting and do not place stickers or accessories around the inside rearview mirror.
Keep the LDWS away from water.
Do not disassemble or impact on the LDWS parts randomly.
Do not place the reflective material (white paper or mirror) on the dashboard as sunlight reflection may cause malfunction.
Driver may not be able to hear the LDWS alarm sound due to excessive noise.
